About Auto Accident Injuries Caused by Defective Seat Belts

Automobile manufacturers, the government, and citizens alike often agree that seat belts for vehicles were one of the most important breakthroughs for ensuring the safety of drivers and their passengers. Defective seat belts can be as harmful and as deadly as none at all.

There are a number of different kinds of seat belt defects. The most common include seat belts which do not close or hold properly, those which are not correctly attached, and those which provide too much or too little restraint on the body even when the person attempts to use it properly.

Auto accident injuries caused by defective seat belts include traumatic injury to the body. The person may suffer injury to the brain or the head, especially in accidents where a defective seat belt results in the person’s head making impact inside the car, or being thrown from the vehicle.

Depending upon the nature and scope of the injury, an auto accident injury caused by defective seat belts may leave a person incapacitated, as paraplegic or quadriplegic. This can occur when the injuries he has sustained in the accident include damage to the spinal cord.

Defective seat belts can also result in internal damage. If the pressure from the seat belt is too extreme, the vertebrae, spleen, appendix, and other internal organs can be affected. In some cases, these injuries can be extreme enough to be life-threatening.

While one may not necessarily think about it, the special needs of small children also account for auto accident injuries caused by defective seat belts. In many of these instances, children sustain life-threatening injuries solely because their special needs were not taken into consideration. If a child uses a seat belt which is not designed for his smaller height and weight, the seat belt is virtually useless. Older model vehicles which still contain lap belts pose a more serious danger to young children.

Seat belts are intended to help prevent serious injury in the event of an automobile accident. When they are designed and used properly, they save lives. Defective seat belts not only fail to prevent injuries, they often contribute to them.
